City Council Eyes Scholarship Fund for Pre-Kindergartners

City Councilman Ricky Burgess introduced legislation Tuesday that would establish a scholarship fund for pre-kindergartners in the city school district, funded by major foundations and educational and medical institutions.

Pittsburgh Public Schools provides free, full-day pre-K to students ages 3-5 and had a waiting list of roughly 340 students last year, according to the legislation. Mr. Burgess said he views the proposal, which would close that gap, as the first step toward universal pre-K.
